Our last tragedy was when we lost both our female ducks to a passing fox, and then after desperately trying to incubate the eggs, we had to admit failure.
This time it seems that the hot weather and the location of the nest is working against us. We now are down to 14 eggs, with some eggs being broken and the contents obviously 'bad', and another two opened and the inner duckling not survivng. Below is not a picture of our brood, but one from google images which seems to have had the same fate.
Sad, unpleasant, tragic, but simple a fact of life, and one that we can't interfere with.

It is all a part of the circle of life. I also think of when a cat rejects a kitten or several and other instances where one could easily ask "how come that didn't work out.. it's all nature.. shouldn't it follow a formula and be fool proof?".
Oh well. Sorry this has happened the way it has. Any animals that are under your families 'wings' seem to have a head start in life it seems because you all have such caring natures!
