Even though I was initially raised in a terrace house in England, we have always had pets. Ranging from the usual dogs and cats, to gerbils [desert rats] and hampsters. Nothing has changed, except now I live on a bigger bit of land [3/4 acre and so can have a wider range of pets.]
Let me introduce Tiffany, our goat. Tiffany was advertised in the local newspaper as free to good home when she was four months old. She apparently kept escaping on the previous owners whom lived in town. So as I thought our sheep [singular] needed a friend, we went and got Tiffany [we chose the name]. Katie, the sheep whom we had had since a day old, died a couple of years later, but Tiffany who seems to see herself as a dog, has the companionship of our dalmation. They are both now nine years old.
As you can see we also have ducks . they inhabit our vegie patch and do a grand job of keeping our vegies pest free. They used to lay a good quantity of eggs to pay for their keep, but that hasn't happened for a couple of months now. We have had the drake, Spice, since he was a duckling. Sherry and Brandy were picked up from a duck farmer [when they were one]after our other two ducks were victims of a fox nabbing. Then they had a hatching of six ducklings, four drakes which were adopted out and two ducks which we kept, giving us the current number of five.
Our love watching them with fresh water as they splash in the wadding pool. then if you turn over soil, Spice who is very tame [for a duck] will dive in for the worms, almost losing his beak in the process.
We are trying to reduce our animal inhabitants, by not replacing them as they pass on, but I doubt that our home will ever be pet free, and honestly I wouldn't have it any other way.
